Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from An Essay on Spenser´s Faery Queen The great dawn of Modern Europe, the sixteenth century, unparalleled in the history of the world for the number of men of great and original genius, is represented in England by three men of the first order: Bacon, Shakespeare and Spenser. The two first of these belong to Mankind at large; Bacon the father of modern philosophy, called the human mind back from the barren pursuit of insoluble problems to apply its whole force to the study and conquest of nature; Shakespeare made Man the subject of the drama, Man in the vast complexity of his nature, in infinite variety of character; not the man of a certain time or country, but Man as he always was and ever will remain. Spenser, on the other hand, is only an Englishman, the child of his time and of the society in which he moved, but at the same time the truest reflection of the political, religious, and social condition of his people in the most momentous period of its great history, the middle part of the reign of Elizabeth. It is true that, unlike his two great contemporaries, he has ceased to be a living power in England no less than in the world in general; but for the student of history it is a delightful task to read in the idealising mirror of his poetry the wonderful combination of ancient classicism and medieval romance, of stern and ascetic faith and wild and world-conquering daring that constitute the character of that extraordinary age. He was considered the representative poet, the truly national laureate of that youthful England which broke the power of Spain, saved the political and religious independence of Europe, and laid the foundation of the greatest naval and colonial empire of the world; and thus, though Spenser may find few readers in our own time, we may say of him in the words of Schiller: Wer den Besten seiner Zeit genug gethan, Der hat gelebt fur alle Zeiten. The Age of Spenser. Many forces were at work in the England of the 16th century to prepare that wonderful outburst of national power and human genius which finds its truest representative in Spenser. Out of the turmoil of civil war, on the ruin of the feudal aristocracy, the Royal Power had raised itself to omnipotence, and the Tudor Dynasty, above all Henry VIII and Elizabeth, tyrannical though they might appear towards individuals, had always used the new power of the Crown in the interests of the nation, so that they not only restored to England her former position in Europe, but won also great popularity for themselves.
