The sketch of Mrs. Sartoris first appeared as a Preface to the republication of "A Week in a French Country House," by Messrs. Smith, Elder & Co., and she wished that her sincere thanks should be given to Mr. John Murray for permission to republish it as well as "From Friend to Friend" and "Two letters from W. M. T." which came out in the Cornhill Magazine. Her thanks were also due to Messrs. Macmillan, and to the Editors of The Sphere and of The Illustrated London News, in which the story of "Binnie" was published in 1893.
