Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Settlers in Canada Captain Marryat published The Settlers in Canada in two small octavo volumes in 1844, and it is one of the few books, in the whole wide range of his work, where the manuscript still exists - all but seven leaves. It was presented by the late Sir Hugh Walpole to the King´s School, Canterbury, and provides an interesting example of that small, flowing, regular, vigorous handwriting which was such a bother to early Victorian compositors. Frederick Marryat (1792-1848) is often judged simply as a writer for the young, as if no one over the age of, say, seventeen need bother to read him, and as if his merits as a writer could be dismissed with a shrug and a good-natured smile of indulgence. This is a wrong-headed view, for the fact is that Marryat not only had an adult view of life, but he was able to project it through a narrative gift rarely excelled; racy, manly, realist. His work derived, like that of Joseph Conrad, from experience over many years at sea, at a time when the mariner´s calling demanded qualities such as endurance, courage, and humour, which are highly useful in the difficult and often ill-rewarded pursuit of writing. He joined the Royal Navy of the supreme era of sail, at the age of fourteen, and in the course of the Napoleonic War. Within a few years he had been over a hundred times engaged with the enemy, though he had had no chance of a part in a great fleet action. He reached the rank of commander just at the time when the protracted struggle was drawing to a close. He had seen more active service, particularly in frigates, than fell to the lot of most officers even of his own tough period. He had made his mark with Lord Cochrane, most brilliant of frigate captains, and he had been shipmates with many who had fought at Trafalgar. The end of the war brought with it a somewhat doubtful prospect to the young officer, still in the early twenties, brimful of energy and ambition. Men-of-war were placed in reserve. Half pay was the common fate, and future opportunities for distinction at sea appeared remote. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
