Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Merry´s Museum, Parley´s Magazine, Woodworth´s Cabinet and the Schoolfellow, 1866, Vol. 22 Wishing, nodding, pondering, dreaming by my crimson-glowing fire, Something strange - an ancient figure - some old god - drew nigh and nigher; Stealing softly close beside me, on a table standing near Down he laid a shining sword, all glittering in the gaslight clear, Doffed a curious-looking cap, which by its flexile wings I knew, And by the winged sandals that from off his feet he drew, Knew ´twas old Mercury himself, who came this New Year´s eve, Dispelling all the fancies I had set me down to weave. Something in the winds shrill whistle - in the outdoor icy chill - Something in the glow within doors, made him nod against his will, So I, honoring him by silence, nodded gracefully in turn, Thinking of the cap and sandals, and what with them I should learn. Soon I knew his heavy breathing left me master of the hour, Donning cap and flying sandals, how I blessed the god-sent power, As with lightning speed I hurried where my thoughts had been before, And, invisible, alighted at each distant Merrys door! Did you hear the midnight greeting that I whispered in your ear - Did you hear it, "Roguish Kate," my greeting of a good New Year? "Oddity," and "Blue-Bell," tell me - you may answer, Jasper, too - Did you know when "Uncle Merry" wished a grand good year to you? "May of Irvington," and "Hero," "Michigander," "Bonnie Bell," Did you hear my Merry greeting? - did you know it, "Saucy Nell?" "Flib" and "Leslie," "Mamie," "Tommy," and "WAR"rior bold and true; [for you; "M. E. A.," that laugh betrayed you; "Sunbeam," here´s a "Ray" "Bob O´Link" and "Birdie" singing; "Pertine" "In the Corner" reading; ["Earnest" greeting? "Wild Rose," "Mignionette," and "Daisy," heard ye not the "Jessie Bell," why are you silent? There´s "Several" still for you; "Sid," "NO Moore," and "Juno" - "Eyes" of "Black" and "Brown" and "Blue." "Ivy Leaf," did you not quiver, when I whispered in your ear, "Eighteen sixty-five is going - sixty-six shall have good cheer?" "Rubie Linden," "Howard," "Keystone," "Kitty Clover," "Hattie Lee," "Venus," Forestina," "Magnet," "Merrimac," and "H. H. B.," One and all I gave you greeting - last, by no means least, "Aunt Sue."
