It gratified his insignificant mind to know that the entire population was gathered on the store verandah awaiting his arrival, and it was said that on one occasion, when he had been before his time, he had waited round the bend in the road until the people arrived at the store. There was only one person in Wayside he was really afraid of. That was Priscilla Trent. Miss Trent had been postmistress in the township for over thirty years, and had become quite uncanny in her knowledge of other people´s affairs, simply by handling their correspondence.
