If the Crow´s Nest and the Castle Were shaped like that by chance, Or if the World´s Great Architect Designed them in advance. Then as I sat and pondered On God´s handiwork anew, The lessons taught by Nature Ever less mysterious grew. For there´s little to accomplish Once you´ve gained the topmost peak; There is seldom real contentment When you reach the goal you seek. Where the mountains rise the highest There are canyons dark and deep; You will find the rocks more treacherous As you near the mountain´s peak. So the man that is most brilliant And attains to greatest fame Oft times falls the very lowest When disgrace attacks his name. When a storm blows in the mountains, With its drifting cold and snow, When a thunder storm is breaking O´er this trembling world below, It is on the highest mountain, peak It seems to vent its spite; It is on some lonely pinnacle It breaks with all its might. So it is among us mortals Who are struggling through this life; The man attaining greatest heights Is centre of most strife; While the lowly humble toiler With his duty done each day, Is much happier and contented, Far less apt to go astray.
