Excerpt from Regulations for Army Medical Services, Vol. 2 1. The Medical Staff Corps is organized for the performance of duties in connection with the hospital service of the army, under the command of officers of the Medical Staff, and is an integral part of the Medical Department. 2. The administration of the Medical Staff Corps is vested in the Director-General of the Army Medical Department; and the Principal Medical Officer of each district and command, subject to the General Officer Commanding, has supreme authority in matters of discipline affecting the corps. 3. The corps in divided for administrative purposes at home into divisions. Parties of the corps in commands abroad are considered detachments. 4. The ranks of the corps are filled by recruits enlisted direct for the corps, or by non-commissioned officers and soldiers who volunteering from other corps may be transferred to the Medical Staff Corps as privates; such volunteers undergo a period of three months´ probation. Classification of Privates as 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class Orderlies. 5. The Privates of the Medical Staff Corps are classified as Orderlies of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class, according to length of service, conduct, ability, and efficiency. They will be advanced from one class to another on the recommendation of the medical officer under whom they may be serving, and on the authority of the Principal Medical Officer of the district or command, according to qualifications displayed; and will, for misconduct, negligence, or inefficiency, be liable to summary reduction from a higher to a lower class by their commanding officer, subject likewise to confirmation by the Principal Medical Officer.
