Many of these were written years ago when I was engaged in pastoral duties, and were suggested by various scenes and incidents which came under my observation and into my experiences. Some of them were suggested by a careful study of the problems of science, and the progress of scientific investigations in the results of which I have ever felt a profound interest. Others of them originated in a careful observation and an adoring love of Nature, which has ever been to me a gospel of beauty, and a source of spiritual exaltation. Many of them express the most sacred relations and experiences of life, and have been evolved from the lights and shades, the smiles and tears that fall upon the path and make up the history of our years.
