Excerpt from The Modern Arthur: And Other Poems The following poems were composed in New Zealand, beneath the gleam of the Southern Cross - a country wherein all of man´s works are new, while those of Nature are very old. There, summer heats prevail in December, and winter´s frosts in July. The subjects which it offers for poetry are not those of the Old World, but the aspects of primitive nature and the traditions and beliefs of a barbarous race. The reader should bear these facts in mind when perusing my verses. Part II contains some Maori legends clothed in a poetical garb. Maori legends are Polynesian legends, with local alterations. Few are worth preserving. The Maoris, before the advent of Europeans to the islands which they inhabit, were warlike cannibals, sunk in superstition, without a written language, or any clearly denned religious beliefs, if indeed they can be said to have possessed religious beliefs, properly so called, at all. The men whose memories they cherished were warriors who had distinguished themselves by the slaughter of a multitude of human beings, and by nothing else.
