Excerpt from Sermons on the Four Marks of the Church, Vol. 2 of 2 It was my original design, as it was also my ardent wish, to have conducted all the controversial parts of this work, upon the same plan with the preceding volume, - with Illustrations appended to each Sermon; - and to have extended the Sermons, with their Illustrations, to the length of five volumes. A few learned and enlightened friends have deemed the plan too extensive; and by its extent, if executed, placing the purchase of the work out of the reach of any but the opulent. I have not the vanity, - for it would be vanity, - to prefer my own opinion to theirs. I have submitted to theirs - although, indeed, very reluctantly. Hence, the omission of Illustrations in this, and the subsequent volume. In their room I have substituted a few notes; and lengthened the Sermons to a measure, which perhaps nearly all may censure. It is true, they are much too long the pulpit. But, let it be understood, that in their present form, they are designed only for the closet. For the closet, they are not too long.
