Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Th Essays of Samuel Johnson: Selected From the Rambler, 1750-1752; The Adventurer, 1753; And the Idler, 1758-1760; With Biographical Introduction and Notes In the early years of the Eighteenth Century the dim and unpretending book-shop of Michael Johnson, at the corner of the Market-place in Lichfield, was one of the established resorts of the more leisured and learned inhabitants of that quaint and somewhat sleepy old city. In the closing years of the Nineteenth Century the house still stands, and has become a place of pilgrimage, for there - on the 18th September 1709 - that "great master of reason," Samuel Johnson, was born. Booksellers in the reign of George the First were not to be found in every town; yet it is charitable to suppose that Lichfield, being the seat of a bishopric, must needs even then have been also a seat of learning. There, accordingly, Michael Johnson fixed his abode and proffered his wares. That he did so with some degree of success is evident from the following sentence from a letter written from Nentham to Lord Gower´s chaplain in 1716: - "Johnson, the Lichfield librarian, is now here; he propagates learning all over this diocese, and advanceth knowledge to its just height; all the clergy here are his pupils, and suck all they have from him." Though old Mr. Johnson kept a shop, the shop would not have kept him if he had not acted occasionally on the aggressive.
