Excerpt from Supplementary Despatches and Memoranda of Field Marshal Arthur Duke of Wellington, K. G, Vol. 3: India, 1797 1805 A letter which Piele received from you this morning has reminded me that I have not written to you since you went away. I have, however, been on a little tour to the Nundy-droog district, which I should have made longer, only that I was obliged to return here to make the preparations for our expedition into Bullum. In consequence of the termination of hostilities to the southward, the Commander-in-Chief has ordered to this country the 77th regiment, two strong battalions of sepoys, and the corps of pioneers. This force, with a strong battalion or a battalion and a half from the garrison, with ten pieces of cannon and four small mortars, are destined for this service, and I hope that we shall march from hence in the beginning of the next month. Besides this force I had given orders to collect a small detachment in Canara in order to co-operate on that side; but the 75th regiment, which was to have been the foundation of it, has been ordered to Bombay, and the battalion of sepoys which was to have formed part must go to Goa. Our footing there has been on the decline for some time past. In the month of June last I made arrangements for reinforcing Sir William Clarke, and at last orders have been received from the Governor-General to hold in readiness a battalion for this service, which General Stuart requires shall be 1200 strong, and which will therefore take two Bombay battalions to complete it. So that by the whole of this arrangement I get in a regiment and two battalions at one door, and I send out the same number at the other. At the service in Bullum will probably be brought to a conclusion by a brisk attack upon Arrekeery, I don´t much regret the want of the force in Canara for that part of the business.
