Naglee, Commanding First Brigade, Casey´s Division, Army of the Potomac Before alluding to the occurrences of the 31 st of May, it would probably add to a better understanding of the subject to refer to the advance of my Brigade on the 24 th, 25 th, and 26 th, a week previous. Having crossed theE,. E,.Bridge, and examined the Chickahoniiny from the R.R. to Bottoms Bridge on the 20 th, and rriade a reconnoissance from the Chimneys near Bottoms Bridge, to within two miles of the James River on Ihe Quaker Road, on the23d, Gen. McOlellan ordered me to make a reconnoissance of the road and country by the Willjamsburg Road, as far as the Seven Pines, on Saturday the 24 th, with instructions, if possible, to advance to the Seven Pines, or the forks of the direct road to Richmond, and the road turning to the right into the road leading from New Bridge to Richmond, and to hold that point, if practicable.
