Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from My Private Diary During the Siege of Paris, 1875, Vol. 1 of 2 There are eighteen thousand Mobiles in camp, and they have just been recalled to Paris by General Trochu, who would perhaps have been wiser if he had sent them in some other direction; for among them are the Villette, or Rochefort division, and they can scarcely be trusted with arms; indeed, they were in open mutiny at Chalons, pulled Marshal Canrobert off his horse, and would have done the same to Colonel de Saillard, only his own men rescued him. The cry of these men is, "We don´t want to go to a camp, or to fight. We want to go home." This is not, however, the feeling of M. Gambetta and other leaders of the Left. They will fight "à outrance." The camp of St.-Maur is a very interesting sight, and yon see in a minute what natural campaigners the French are. The eighteen thousand Mobiles have only been under canvas twenty-four hours, and yet they have streets, gardens, restaurants, a theatre, a dancing-booth, and newspapers. All the streets, and most of the tents, have names. On many of the tents the names of all quartered in them are written, and Paris invention has been taxed to coin names for the different residences of the nobility and gentry now, mal gré bon gré, living on the barren heath.
