Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from In These Latter Days The first edition of this book was written and sent to press prior to the declaration of war on Germany. In this later edition but little revision was found necessary. Conditions may change but facts remain. What is once true is always true. Subsequent events however may profitably be brought forward to elucidate or more firmly establish facts previously presented. In the rapid evolution of important events colors may fade or deepen upon the canvas, but the fundamentals of history are found in every day´s doings, from which there is no appeal. Even in this whirligig of progress we can safely discern how far astray are certain forced or fanatical views regarding some of the most important issues which have yet arisen in the brief life of our Republic. Obviously a knowledge of the past is necessary properly to understand the present or fore cast the future. Three years ago, in his Modern Fallacies, while the cry was "peace at any price," and a president was later elected "because he kept us out of war," the author wrote, "Better the United States should join the Allies than that Germany should win." He said also, then as now, Beware of Nippon; beware of breeding Japanese in America for American citizenship; safeguard China; hold the Pacific; elevate public morality; purify government, - in a word Americanize America, and this ever with renewed hope thanking God for that modicum of pure patriotism in our midst ready to fight for the honor and integrity of the nation. The author begs leave here to thank his friends for the many kind words of approbation and encouragement he has received in the none too pleasant task of pointing out some of the more glaring faults that retard the progress of our commonwealth.
