Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Selections of Editorial Miscellanies and Letters In my more than fifty years of connection with the publication of the Fredonia Censor, I have of course witnessed many changes. I have lived to see my eightieth year, and a large part of these years have been spent in this village. The Censor has from week to week been the chronicle of these changes not only in our village, but in the County, State. Nation and throughout the world. The facilities of travel and exchange of thought have been marvelously increased, and have caused a feeling of kinship that was unknown or at least not realized a half century ago. Mind is triumphing over matter with accelerated power, and the subserviency of the material things of the universe to the comfort and convenience of the people of the earth is growing more and more apparent as the years roll on. The press as the vehicle of thought and progress now has a diffusive power not dreamed of in former years. During my more than fifty years of journalistic experience, I have been a witness of some of this progress; though having but an insignificant part in it, the observation has been none the less opportune. I do not propose to give a history of the past half century; that would require an effort far beyond my capacity and ability. All I propose to do is to give selections of editorials on various subjects presented at the time, with letters from various parts of the country in which I have traveled, some of the important events of local history which have transpired, and some other letters which have been written to the Censor which I think will interest the reader. I commenced the preparation of matter for this volume at about the beginning of my eightieth year, and the reader will hardly expect so much adaptation to the times in which we now live as a younger person would manifest. Perhaps it will be attributed to an undue amount of egotism that I have undertaken this work. As I have undertaken it with the hope of pleasing some of my friends, and not for emolument, I feel that a failure to meet the expectations of the general public need not give me much concern. The pages devoted to family genealogy, I have inserted for the benefit of near relatives interested in the preservation of the data given. The general reader can pass those pages by.
