Excerpt from Seventieth Birthday of James Freeman Clarke: Memorial of the Celebration by the Church of the Disciples, Monday Evening April 5, 1880 Early in March it was whispered among the members of the Church of the Disciples that Mr. Clarke´s seventieth birthday was near at hand; and, in accordance with a very general feeling in the society, immediate steps were taken to celebrate the occasion in a fitting manner. The Pastoral and Finance Committees came together, and chose, from the various church committees and the members of the society at large, a general committee to take charge of all the arrangements of the proposed celebration. Mr. Clarke´s wishes were then consulted, and it was found that they entirely coincided with those of the committee. Our plan was to have a social gathering in the vestry, and not to make it a public occasion, except so far as to include all the present and past surviving members of the Church of the Disciples and a few of Mr. Clarke´s classmates and friends.
