Atwell In the days of the Revolutionary struggle, there lived in New London county, Conn., a farmer whose name was Benjamin Atwell, and whose wife was the daughter of one Col. Lee. They were grandparents of George Benjamin Atwell, the subject of these sketches. In religious faith they were rigid Presbyterians, and their history shows that they were brave and loyal citizens. Benjamin Atwell was six feet two inches in height, and was, for a time, one of Washington´s life guard. At the burning of New London by Benedict Arnold in 1781, he became aware of the intended attack, and was another "Paul Revere," riding through the night and stopping at each house with endeavor to alarm and rouse the people. His wife was a royal woman, tender and gentle-hearted, yet remarkable for her fortitude and courage. Many stories are told of her to illustrate this, one of which will suffice for our purpose.
