Scientific men so far as they are honest, and religious men so far as they are honest, are in pursuit of one and the same object. All controversy, all apparent contradiction, springs from the ignorance of the persons who are engaged in it. From a few facts that come within its ken, the Church constructs as stem of theology; and from its few facts the world constructs a system of science. Both, by reason of the limited knowledge of the constructors, must be very defective; and from these defects it follows that the two systems clash, inevitably clash. But between the divine plan of theology and the divine framework of science is no clashing. They are not simply harmonious: they are one. Science is but a knowledge of the divine method.
