It is reprinted from a, series of articles appearing in the Vermont University Cynic during the winter of 1899-1900 and is, so far as we have been able to ascertain, the first published biography of the poet. As, in the future, the compiler may attempt a more carefully written tribute to Saxe´s memory, he earnestly requests those into whose hands the present work may come to communicate to him any errors or inconsistencies that they may detect, as well as facts or incidents that will add completeness to the sketch.
