Barnabas School, February 3, 1886 This brief account of a parson´s holiday is an attempt to fulfil a promise to my people of a lecture on America. It is not published, the ground traversed and the scenes and places described being already familiar enough to those who visit, or who read books about, the United States. It has rather outgrown, in the course of writing, the limits of a lecture, as the desire grew upon me to retain and deepen the many impressions made by a first visit to the New World. I am printing it that my hearers may have, if they like, the opportunity of reading what in the lecture-room I was obliged to omit; and also that I may have the pleasure of placing it in the hands of a few of my friends on both sides of the Atlantic, to whom I am indebted for many kindnesses.
