Excerpt from Sir James Outram´s Campaign in India, 1857-1858 This volume has been printed for private circulation among the personal friends and comrades in arms of Sir James Outram. When Sir James Outram, after the fall of Lucknow, assumed the seat in the Supreme Council of India to which he had been appointed some months previously, he found himself overwhelmed with applications from officers who had served under him, for extracts from his General Orders and Official Correspondence, for testimonials to personal services, and for authoritative statements regarding various events connected with the recent campaign. Unable to reply to these almost incessant requisitions without neglecting his duties as member of Council, Sir James invoked the aid of the Government press; and leaving his friends to make their own extracts, he furnished them with authenticated printed copies of his Despatches. This concession, however, led to fresh demands. In the Calcutta reprint, the Despatches and other documents were given, without reference to the chronological order of the events they described, and in a form neither pleasant to the eye nor convenient for reference.
