Giacomo Casanova´s sinister genius is essentially Venetian and Spanish. Goldoni in his youth was fascinated by certain strolling players who took him by boat from Venice to Chiozza. Casanova, who was born in Venice, of Spanish and Venetian parentage, on April 7th, 1725, was the son of two strolling players. His father, Gaetano Casanova, showed the adventurous spirit of the family by running away at the age of nineteen with a young actress, Fragoletta, becoming himself an actor, before he married Zanetta Farusi. Casanova, among his infinite passions, was always ardent after young actresses: Manon Balletti, for instance, the daughter of Silvia and Mario Balletti, the famous actors of the Comedie Frangaise. Goldoni met, in Venice, a beautiful woman who was called Zanetta Casanova and La Buranella :she played young lover´s parts in comedies, she did not know one note of music, she had a perfect ear and she pleased the public.
