Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The American Era I have written this book as the appeal of a citizen to his fellow citizens. I have written in the first person for I would fain be as personal as possible. The reader will find here no recondite scholarship, no marshalling of laboriously gathered facts, no startling revelation or new discovery. I write neither as one having authority nor yet as one of the scribes. I come as a citizen to meet his fellow citizens in committee of the whole to consider the condition of the country and of the world. The matters that concern us are commonplaces of popular knowledge whose meaning is after all no commonplace, for it is to these commonplaces that we must turn for the saving of the nations. I am dazed by the height to which we have suddenly been lifted as a people, and appalled at the abyss that yawns before us. Our opportunity is so immeasurably great, our temper so lawless, and our thought so unconscious that I await developments with mingled anticipation and terror. We seem at times to be walking like the somnambulist along some dizzy ledge where waking men fear to go. Yet wake we must and choose our path with open eyes. We shall find no royal road, no magic formula, no panacea. It is homely virtues that must save us, virtues that the world has known since Sinai, but virtues that are ever new in their application to changing conditions and require the renewal of our allegiance. In accordance with the purpose of the book I have made a minimum use of footnotes and reference to authorities.
