The point of view maintained throughout the volume has been that of John and his Christian contemporaries in the Roman province of Asia. In order to make that ancient situation clear to modern readers, care has been taken first to explain the specific circumstances which called forth the writing of John´s book. And since he chose to employ that peculiar type of literary expression known as apocalyptic, it has been deemed advisable to give a fairly full account of other writings of this class current among those ancient peoples. A knowledge of the various apocalyptic books then extant and acquaintance with the method of their composition are prerequisite to a correct understanding of the Apocalypse of John.
