Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Missouri Christian Lectures, Delivered at Independence, 1883 The following pages contain essays and discussions relating to questions which, at present, occupy a prominent place in the public mind. The Missouri Christian Lectureship was instituted for the study and discussion of such questions - not because Christian fellowship depends on an agreement touching any questions of a scientific or speculative character, but because, in the advocacy and defense of the Christian faith, it is needful to understand all the current discussions that threaten that faith, and desirable that the preachers of the gospel should be as nearly agreed as possible in their views of such questions and in their methods of dealing with them. United simply on one faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and obedience to him - having no human creed to dictate to us what views we shall hold on the great variety of theological, scientific and philosophical questions that are thrust upon public attention, our way to a common understanding and to unity of sentiments, so far as such questions are concerned, is that of free discussion, in which all may, without fear of incurring the odium theologieum, speak out freely what is in him, to be subjected in brotherly love, to the criticism of his brethren. Thus may we prove all things, and hold fast that which is good. By this means, and not by blind or tame submission to a human creed, we hope to reach a general agreement, even on questions in reference to which unity of sentiment, if not essential, is still desirable. Moreover, we have many young ministers whose reading is limited, and whose convictions on many questions which they need to understand-in order to an enlightened advocacy of the gospel, are necessarily unripe. Among our older ministers, some are well read on one question, some on another. Tastes, habits, opportunities differ. Hence, in this Lectureship, we form a common stock, each contributing what is in his possession for the common good, and all becoming enriched by others, while giving of their own for the general welfare. We thus seek to become better acquainted with the living issues of the times, and learn how to deal with them.
