Excerpt from Mathematics Inaugural Address on the Nature, Language and Uses of Mathematical Science The first, and surely the most difficult duty assigned to me by the Board of Trustees, is that of explaining to a popular audience the nature of Mathematical Science - the forms of its language - its uses as a means of mental training and development - its value as the true basis of the practical - the sources of knowledge which it opens to the mind and the place which it should occupy in a justly balanced system of Collegiate instruction. The term Mathematics, as used by the ancients, embraced every known Science and was also applicable to all other branches of Knowledge. Subsequently, it was restricted to those more difficult subjects which require continuous attention, severe study, patient investigation and exact reasoning; and such subjects were called Disciplinal, or Mathematical. Mathematics, as a science, is conversant about the laws of Numbers and Space. The two abstract quantities. Number and Space, are the only subjects of Mathematical Science.
