Penelope discovered asleep on circular ottoman C., with a work-basket beside her. Enter Saunders from door L. 2 E. with portmanteau. Saund. (at door) Miss Penelope! Miss Penelope! Pen. (starting up) Well, what do you, want? Saund. Here´s old Thornycroft. (comes to C. at back) Pen. (getting up) What, at this time of night? (puts work-basket on table L.) Saund. And master not come home. Pen. Nor missus neither. Saund. I hope he won´t want anything to eat. Pen. Is that his luggage? Saund. Come to stop a month apparently, (gets to) Pen. Well, put it into the spare room. (Exit Saunders, R. 1 E.) Ah, here is Mr. Thornycroft. Enter Uncle John from door L. 2 E. Uncle. Good evening, Miss Penelope. (to C., puts coat on ottoman) Pen. Good evening, sir. (helps him) Uncle. And so your master has not yet come home? Pen. Not yet, sir. Uncle. How hard he does work, to be sure. Not home from business at half-past eleven.
