Excerpt from History of the Presbyterian Church in the Dominion of Canada: From the Earliest Times to 1834; With a Chronological Table of Events to the Present Time, and Map This volume is chiefly devoted to the earlier portion of the history of the Presbyterian Church in the Dominion. When commencing to write this history I hoped to be able to complete it in a single volume of moderate size. As materials accumulated it seemed better to reserve the latter portion for a future publication. But as I may not be able to complete the work for several years - perhaps never - I subjoin to the present volume a chronological table exhibiting leading events in the later as well as the earlier portion of the history. This table, along with numerous items of information respecting events of later dates contained in this volume, may serve, in the meantime, to furnish a comprehensive view of the whole history of the Church. The earlier portion of the history terminates with the year 1834, close of which there were eight distinct presbyteries or synods in the Dominion. In connection with each of these steps were taken about this time to ascertain the state of congregations and mission-fields in all the Provinces. Journals and reports were in consequence prepared and published, summaries of which are given in different chapters in this volume. These will enable the reader to form an estimate of the state of Presbyterianism in the Dominion half a century ago, and to compare it with its present position as exhibited in the chronological table. Of all, or nearly all, the Presbyterian ministers who laboured in the Dominion previous to 1835 brief biographical sketches are given in this volume.
