Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from The Supreme Court and the Electoral Commission: An Open Letter to the Hon. Joseph H. Choate From John Bigelow The letter to Mr. Choate, here submitted to the public in a pamphlet form, first appeared in the New York Sun on the 19th of July, 1903, with the following editorial introduction: Mr. Bigelow Reminds Mr. Choate of 1877. We need not invite attention to the remarkable article in which Mr. John Bigelow discusses for the benefit of Ambassador Choate and everybody else the relation of the Supreme Court to the Electoral Commission of 1877 and the momentous decision which Mr. Justice Bradley´s vote determined. It is twenty-six years since that extra-constitutional tribunal excluded Mr. Tilden from the office to which a great part of the people of the United States then believed that he had been legally elected. The passions of the controversy have passed into history, but the constitutional principles are the same as they were a quarter of a century ago, and Mr. Bigelow shows that they make as interesting a subject as ever.
