Excerpt from The Physician in Industry: A Symposium For many years it has been the custom of railway, mining, lumber and other industries to employ physicians to care for injured and sick employees. This medical supervision became imperative when industries were located in districts more or less remote; indeed, in some instances the medical aid thus provided by an industry was the only available source of such aid for a considerable territory. The service rendered proved so valuable in keeping employees fit that gradually it was extended to provide for large groups of workers, so that by 1914 many physicians were giving a part or all of their time to industrial work. It was soon recognized that the physician in industry was engaged in helping to solve the health problems of large communities. In many instances his sphere of influence extended outside the plant and reached into the homes of the employees, providing for many groups the necessary guidance for such emergencies as accidents and epidemics and occasionally for the ordinary visitations of sickness. The need for standardizing the procedure and coordinating the efforts of this type of medical practice soon became apparent, and out of this need in April, 1914 grew the Conference Board of Physicians in Industry. This Board was organized for cooperative effort in introducing into industrial establishments the most effective measures for the treatment of injuries or ailments of employees; for promoting sanitary conditions in workshops; and for prevention of industrial diseases. The membership of the Board is made up of physicians and surgeons engaged in the clinical and administrative phases of medical work as related to the care of groups of employees. Bi-monthly meetings of a day´s session each are held in New York City, and at these meetings common problems have been discussed, procedure has been standardized, and efforts have been coordinated to the end that the medical service given may be improved, thus benefiting employee and employer alike.
