I, Roger Larksway, at present of Melbourne, Victoria, was born near Greenwich Park, in a secluded dell full of rural beauty, although it was not far from the great busy city of London. As I now write, recollections of my early days come pleasantly waving over my fancy, like odours from a clover-field, or from buttercups and daisies in a newly-mown meadow. Our cottage was in an artificial wilderness of flowers and scented clinging plants, encircled with a hedgerow of hawthorn, woodbines, and sweet-brier. It was, indeed, a charming retreat, "the dearest spot on earth to me," and every flower which grew there seems to be still living in my memory, in perennial bloom and perfume. All the little birds around loved to hop about our garden, and they used to sing as cheerfully as if they were in the woods; for they seemed to know that there were no cruel boys to entrap them, and that our pet cat was stone blind.
