Excerpt from Clinical Studies on Diseases of the Eye: Including Those of the Conjunctiva, Cornea, Sclerotic, Iris, and Ciliary Body Although within the past few years an unusual number of ophthalmological text-books has been published in the English language, the translator thinks no apology necessary for presenting to the American profession an English version of Prof. Arlt´s latest work. Writing in the eve of a long and useful career, the author has embodied in his "Clinical Studies" the very essence of his mature experience, which reaches over almost half a century of ophthalmic practice. A work of this kind is distinct from an ordinary text-book, and is always welcome both to the general practitioner and the specialist. To preserve the distinctive original features of the work, the translator has abstained from interpolating the text, even where his views differed from the author´s, but he thought it permissible to mention, in parenthesis (at the proper places), the new local anæsthetic, which has come so rapidly into favor since the German edition was published. The translator takes pleasure in acknowledging the favor Prof. Arlt has bestowed in permitting him to translate his book. And he also wishes to express sincere and unfeigned thanks to his friend, Dr. F. C. Hotz, to whom he is under great obligations for valuable advice, and the untiring kindness with which he assisted him in this translation.
