Excerpt from Our Republic Liberty and Equality Founded on Law: Oration Delivered Before the City Council and Citizens of Boston, in the Boston Theatre, on the One Hundred and Fifth Anniversary of the Declaration of American Independence, July 4, 1881 To His Honor Frederick O. Prince, Mayor, and the Gentlemen of the City Council of Boston: - In response to your courteous Resolution, I respectfully forward for your disposal a copy of my Oration, which was fully prepared during the latter part of last month; the few changes occasioned by the horrid attempt, on the 2d inst., to murder the President of the United States, being marked to be printed in Italics. I only wish that the treatment of my theme had been more powerful, and the moral of the history and basis of our Republic more distinctly set forth; for among other lessons this can be drawn, that assassination and mob-rule can nowhere be the successful means of obtaining Liberty, which, indeed, can only be secured by a system of measures not repugnant to the Divine Law.
