The most significant epoch in American history is not that of the war itself but of the fifteen years preceding. In spite, therefore, of the care with which the ground has already been covered, there will be continued a vivid interest not merely in matter, even of the slightest, which will contribute to the knowledge of American conditions during those troubled years, but also in such critical discussions as may throw the events and personalities of the times into clearer relief, though the gain from any given effort be trifling. It is for this reason, probably, that the past few years have witnessed the repeated rewriting of the history of the ante-bellum period and of the biographies of those who were then influential in shaping the nation´s future.
