Excerpt from Thoughts for the Times These sheets are what may be deemed a reconnaissance, to use a military term, of the public mind in respect to some matters connected with the present war. I come before the public as one speaking from a dumb mouth, that, according to the heretofore popular idea, has no right to speak. I never used the breath of speech to promote an election, unless I might except an unimportant boyish instance which occurred many years ago; I was never in office; was never voted for by any single man; I never offered myself as a candidate to become a candidate for the public vote; was never a candidate; was never a member of a political party, - How, then, can I properly say any thing on public affairs? In the first chapter of this pamphlet I mean to show, that the troubles of this country grow, at least in part, out of its politics; the politicians mend not, but they mar; therefore, perhaps a word from a man who is not a politician may be, though not asked for by the community, not unacceptable; at all events, not unadapted to the public needs.
