Excerpt from The Shilling Soldiers Denis Norman Garstin was born on the 22nd July, 1890. He won a scholarship at Blundell´s School, Tiverton, in 1904, and was afterwards a scholar at Sydney Sussex College, Cambridge. In 1912 he took up a tutorship in the Crimea, and from that time until the outbreak of war contributed many articles to the London Press, He was in Russia in July, 1914, reached England in the middle of August, and was given a commission in the 18th Hussars. He crossed to France in the spring of 1915, and was transferred to the 10th Hussars, served with the machine-gun squadron at the battles of Ypres, Thiepval, Albert and Loos.
