Robertson Smith, M.A., On the Old Testament in the Jewish Church The present volume owes its origin to a course of lectures on Biblical Criticism by W. Robertson Smith, M.A., delivered in Edinburgh and Glasgow in the beginning of the current year, before audiences, as the author informs us, of not less than eighteen hundred, and given to the public afterwards in a volume of 446 pages. The object aimed at in the course, was to give the Scottish public "an opportunity of understanding the position of the newer criticism, in order that they might not condemn it unheard." Stated otherwise, the delivery of these lectures was simply an appeal from the decision of the Free Church Commission, in the previous October, suspending the author "from the ordinary work of his chair in Aberdeen," to the general tribunal of "the Scottish public," who, of course, are presumed by the lecturer to be more competent than the Free Church Commission to sit in judgment on the claims of "the newer criticism."
