Produktbeschreibung
Excerpt from Columbia "Where should the scholar live? In solitude, or in society, in the green stillness of the country, where he can hear the heart of Nature beat, or in the dark gray town, where he can hear and feel the throbbing heart of man? I make answer for him, and say, in the dark gray town." - Longfellow. Columbia University is but one of many homes for the city scholar. In the United States alone there are eight hundred degree-granting institutions, most of them in or near the cities. A good number of them have been dubbed universities for no better reason than the impressive sound of the word, until in some sections universities are no rarer than colonels. The abuse of the name, however, must not blind us to the significance in our life of the real university, which, as the medieval cathedral stood six hundred years ago, stands to-day as the best embodiment of the uplifting forces of the human spirit. In 1893 Professor von Hoist declared that we did not have a single university in the sense in which the term is used in Europe. To-day there are on the North American continent a score. No one of them is the great American university. Each leads the others in one field or another. It is, indeed, to the general interest that each should maintain a character true to its historic relations and just to the work it finds to do. In the pages that follow I have endeavored to emphasize the matters in which Columbia differs for better or for worse from other institutions, and have omitted, or treated as briefly as possible, those which are characteristic of our universities in general.
