Various French memoirs, and especially a very interesting autobiography entitled ´Une Famille noble souls la Terreur,´ furnished the materials for ´A Will and a Way.´ Most of the characters are drawn from the same source; some of the names are changed. The principal incident in ´The Handker-cheif at the Window´ is borrowed from a beautiful metrical version, by Mrs. Campbell of Isaly, of a popular tradition current in the western islands of Scotland.
