Excerpt from Irrigation: Southern Europe: Being the Report of a Tour of Inspection of the Irrigation Works of France, Spain, and Italy, Undertake in 1867-68 for the Government of India It was in January, 1867, when my chief engineer and most kind friend, the late Lieut.-Colonel J. H. Dyas, R.E., was inspecting the Eastern Jumna Canal, of which I then had executive charge, that I told him of my desire to see something of the Irrigation Works of Europe, during my approaching furlough. And I believe it was to him that I was indebted for the application made by the Grovernment of India to the Secretary of State, that I should be deputed " to visit and report upon the Cavour Canal and other works of irrigation in Italy, Southern France, and Spain." Various occurrences, naturally to be expected by a person returning home from a long residence in India, prevented my starting till December, 1867; and my work was not nearly finished when the sad tidings reached me that Colonel Dyas, like his two immediate predecessors, Colonels Baird Smith and Turnbull, had been cut off in the prime of his life, a martyr to an unsparing self-devotion to his work while sticking to his post and fighting against sickness long after he should have gone home to recruit his health.
