Official documents and private correspondence in the libraries of Milan, Florence, and Paris have been carefully examined, and contemporary memoirs in Italian, French, and English freely utilised. To acknowledge individually my many obligations to friends in Italy and France would tax the patience of my readers. I wish, however, to make known my special indebtedness to the Commendatore Raffaello Barbiera, an Italian biographer of the Princess Belgiojoso, whose patient investigations and minute studies of the social and political undercurrents of Milanese local history have been of inestimable value, not only as indications of the route to be followed, but in facilitating the laborious task of winnowing the chaff from the grain amidst discouraging piles of official records.
