Excerpt from The Sheridans, Vol. 2 Though Sheridan had been in possession of the theatre for a dozen years, his embarrassments had begun early, and had steadily increased, but not so as to overpower his arts of contrivance. Not yet, however, shall we open the chapter of the shifts and devices by which he encountered debt and raised supplies. For these there was little excuse, as the theatre might have handsomely supplied his wants. At the lowest calculation he must have drawn some thousands a year as his share - possibly four or five. But all was carelessly administered or totally neglected. While the theatre was in this condition, the manager conceived a bold scheme for extrication. The debts on the house now reached to over £50,000, which included Garrick´ smortgage still unpaid, together with other charges on the shares.
