Excerpt from English Review, Vol. 3 It is just now when the shopping: carnival is at its height, that one begins to discover how materially the war has affected prices, and how marvellously all the big London shops and stores have combined to keep up their supplies under extremely trying circumstances. Incidentally, the altered conditions have done a great deal towards helping to foster several home industries that, before the war. suffered acutely from Continental competition. At the present moment shopping presents unique attractions, insomuch as many bargains are being offered; for there is little doubt but what the winter sales, which being early in January, will present the most tempting sale lists that London has ever vet known. Women who are wise and look ahead will, therefore, do well to lake the utmost advantage of what the present offers, and seize this opportunity of laying in a stock of really serviceable articles of all sorts and description. The reason for this is that it is an open secret that not only dress, but everything appertaining to household appointments, is destined to show a considerable increase in cost before long. The best economy can therefore he practised by buying in what will be the cheapest market for some few weeks. Having regard to this, it is worth noting that styles having undergone so drastic a change during the past twelve months, it is safe to prophesy that fashion will not show any great alteration for some time to come; therefore one is perfectly safe in purchasing clothes with little fear of them going out of fashion. In the world of dress bargains promise to be particularly alluring, for the Winter sales arc always productive of far less trash than those that end the Summer season. At times like the present, one finds really good model dresses and well-cut coats and skirts so substantially reduced that many arc sold at prices that often do not represent half their original cost; also many good dressmakers make a practice of setting aside the next two months for making-up customers´ own materials at reduced prices, so that bargains in high-class woollen stuffs, silks and velvets arc well worth hunting for.
