Here is a book containing some sketches of travel which originally appeared in the pages of Hogg´s Instructor. They were hastily written; and when I learned, a little time since, that it was the Proprietor´s intention to publish them in a volume, I immediately set to work, blotting out, re-writing, and revising, to the very best of my abilities; but soon discovered that it was a much easier thing to write a new story, than to patch up an old one, and the consequence is, that, although I have done my utmost to make the Whittlings worthy of your perusal, they still fall considerably short of what I wished to see them before they were submitted to you in their present form.
