Slightly phrasing Lincoln´s words, and applying them to education, it may be said : "Some people may be fooled all the time, and a few may be fooled for a long time." In Iowa, or any other state where any school is being taught "in the past tense," where the daily work goes on to the refrain, "We run the same course that our fathers have run," - it is first of all the teachers´ fault. Such workers could even learn a valuable lesson from the unlettered cowboys, whose object in a snowstorm is "to keep the herd on the move," no matter where they drive them. There are many schools snowed in, drifted over, waiting to be dug out - all on account of their inactivity. It is the teachers´ work to keep "the herd on the move," and in the right direction.
