Often as it is sung with the heart, it cannot be said that it is always sung "with the understanding also." The reasons for this are many. Much of it is confessedly hard to understand, even with the best aids of exegesis and archæology. The text is sometimes obscure, even to desperation, and the English version not seldom leaves upon the mind an impression of complete confusion (cf. Ps. 17 : 14).
