Produktbeschreibung

Excerpt from Chinese Immigration, Vol. 2 This study was begun during the excitement incident to the passage and enforcement of the Geary law in 1892 and 1893; continued as part of a course in Race Problems given at Stanford University; and completed with the assistance of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. The historical portion ends with the fire of April eighteenth, 1906, in which the Chinese quarter and most of the city libraries in San Francisco were destroyed. It now appears that this date also marked the close of a natural historical period; for since that time important changes have been made both in the regulations and the official personnel of the Chinese immigration and consular service, which may result in even more important modifications of policy. In the original plan a chapter on the Chinese in other Pacific states was contemplated, but since, up to 1882, over 70 per cent, of the Chinese were in California, it was thought best for the sake of space to omit it. However, many of the illustrations in the chapters on administration, competition and assimilation, have been drawn from this unused material and it is believed that no factor essential to a just presentation of the subject has been neglected.
