Many of them were hurriedly written, and lack that polish so essential to true Poetry; but, at the solicitation of many friends, I have been induced to publish them in the present form. Those who peruse this Book to discover imperfections will find many; but as some of the Pieces refer to places in the County endeared by many a fond recollection, and as the vale of the Girvan has been unsung by a nobler Poet, such considerations, despite its imperfections, were the chief reasons for inducing me to accede to a request so highly gratifying. The measure of success that has been vouchsafed, even previous to publication, is a source of much satisfaction; and I would be destitute of a proper feeling of gratitude did I not warmly thank all those who have already thought so much of these stray effusions as to subscribe for my unpretending Volume.
