Well, the preface is a sign-post to their elders to warn them not to follow the road unless it tempts them with its windings or its friendly shade. Yet I hope the book is not distinctly juvenile. I have tried not to "write down" to my young readers. No short sketch can pretend to be a complete "life." The best it can do is to leave a general impression of the man, to entice the reader to look further, and to know his hero better. But young people will not read tomes! And some older people have not the patience to read a long life in several thick volumes, even to make a friend. The facts in these sketches are, of course, gathered from books and articles already published - a library of "lives and letters"; but they have been gathered lovingly and painstakingly, and combined in a new way. I acknowledge, as I put my labors into your hands, that I have used all sources freely. I hope I have given credit honestly. Only the combining is my own. And if I have succeeded in putting my readers into sympathy with my heroes, it is because I was first in sympathy with them, myself.
